About Washington
Commonly referred to as Washington State to distinguish it from the nation’s capital, it was named after George Washington, the first United States president. Its official name is the State of Washington, and its history is no different from its neighboring states. One of the most ancient human remains was found in Washington territory, proving that men have inhabited the region for at least 9,300 years.
Later, the British Empire ceded part of the land that now forms the State of Washington to Spanish settlers, and Washington was admitted to the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state. Olympia is the state’s capital, and Seattle is Washington’s largest and most populous city.
The Pacific Ocean surrounds Washington’s western border, while the rest of the state consists of mountain ranges, deep rainforests, and semi-arid basin regions. The nearby Canadian border makes many trucking companies in Washington take advantage of its industrial corridors and freight distribution centers.
